About Mother Lake
Inspiration for this work comes from my childhood memories at the lake and the many days spent there as a mother with my family. The paintings convey both immediacy and warmth, with loose brush strokes and a strong sense of light. I want the viewer to be brought back to their own memories at the shore.
The subjects of the paintings take the viewer on a walk down to the shore - from the forest, to the dunes, to the water. It is a walk that I’ve taken both as a child, with my children, and as an observer of nature. The focus of the painting shifts as we take this walk: moving from the close-up of toads, plants, and flowers, to the distant sliver of water through the trees. The shifting perspectives echo the ways my mind and purpose shift each time I come to the lake. It may be to find peace, to breathe, to notice, to experience joy, or to feel the presence of God.
